Ordinarily this would be reported and viewed as just another homicide in Chicago; just another child who lost their life to gun-violence. Well let me tell you, this is not just a regular homicide that plagues many African-American communities across our nation –no, not by a long shot. You see, this was Hadiya Pendleton a 15 year old student at King College Prep in Chicago, IL.
Hadiya Pendleton was a member of her school’s drill team; a marching band in which she was a drum majorette. Hadiya Pendleton was an honor student and had dreams and aspirations to go into politics based on her experience and visit to our nation’s capitol, Washington, DC, where she and her band mates from King College Prep preformed at the second inauguration for our current president Barack H. Obama.
No! This is not just another innocent life that was taken far too soon; this my friends is a wakeup call –FOR REAL!
You see, Chicago, IL is the home state of our First Lady Michelle Obama, and it is also the home state of our president; all presidents have a home state from which they launch their candidacy for president. This hit home for the president and first lady and it hit home hard. They, like I, have two lovely daughters who have the whole world ahead of them. This, my friends, was senseless and the world has lost someone special. Do not get me wrong, all lives lost to gun-violence, whether it is in the streets of Chicago, a school in Newtown, or a playground in Brooklyn is senseless to say the lest –Enough is Enough!
I watched Hadiya Pendleton’s mother, Cleo Cowley, fight back tears and heartbreak as she spoke about her baby to the Rev. Al Sharpton on PoliticsNation (MSNBC), January 31, 2013, and it just broke my heart. I cannot imagine any mother, let alone the mother of my children, or me for that matter, to receive a phone call at work stating that your baby has be shot. Yes, I said baby, because she was just a child, but not just any child; you see, all children belong to God.
Now is the time; to put an end to the genocide of our African-American children at the hands of our African-American children.
Now is the time; to stop waiting on government to fix the ills of our African-American communities.
Now is the time; to stop blaming the world for our problems and taking our frustrations out on innocent children.
Now is the time!
Please watch this with your children, and may God bless you and your family

Cleo Cowley, the mother of Hadiya Pendleton, spoke with Al Sharpton today. She shared the story of who her daughter was, her dreams and her aspirations. It’s hard to watch this and not have your heart break. Cleo Crowley reminds us that there are a too many mothers sharing this same heartache.
